Amazing Hollywood Canteen Photos

Now that Bruce Torrence’s and Lisa Mitchell’s book, The Hollywood Canteen, is going to be released in July or August, it’s time to tell the world about the great text and wonderful photographs that are contained in this exciting book.

The text was written by Lisa and the selection of Hollywood Canteen photos were chosen by Bruce.  They all came from his vast collection of Hollywood photographs which can be seen on his hollywoodphotographs.com web site.  The site has over 8000 historic and not so historic photographs of old Hollywood.

Within the collection are more than three hundred images of the Hollywood Canteen.  They include images of the opening ceremony, servicemen dancing with celebrities, movie stars entertaining, and all the other activities that took place at the Hollywood Canteen.  Located on Cahuenga Ave., just south of Sunset Blvd., the Canteen opened in October 1942 and closed on Thanksgiving day, 1945.  During its three year existence, it played host to over three million servicemen.  It was founded by Bette Davis and John Garfield and operated by volunteers from all facets of the entertainment business.  In additon to the Hollywood Canteen photos are thousands of other Hollywood Images.

One of the most frequent volunteers was the young actress, Joan Leslie, who worked at the Canteen at least one night a week.  Another tireless volunteer was the very popular actress Marlene Dietrich.  Whether it was sweeping that needed to be done or dancing with the servicemen, she did it all.

Of course, the Canteen could not have existed if it wasn’t for Bette Davis.  She was truly the driving force behind the success of the Hollywood Canteen.  When Warner Bros. decided to make the movie “Hollywood Canteen”, they had Bette play herself.

Photos of hundreds of celebrities who worked at the Hollywood Canteen can be seen on the Hollywoodphotographs.com web site.  Photos of Rita Hayworth, Spencer Tracy and Hedy Lamarr are only a few of these great images.
