Hollywood Airfield Photos

In 1918,  Cecil B DeMille, founded the Mercury aviation company and built his first airfield, DeMille  field number one, across from the present location of Fairfax high school. Soon to know built a second airfield, DeMille Field #2, and moved his enterprise to the north west corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Crescent Avenue, now Fairfax Avenue.

Mercury aviation operating a fleet of surplus WWI “Jennys” and offered popular sightseeing trips around the area. The airfield feature a gas station at the intersection that fueled automobiles on one side and airplanes on the other side. Early Hollywood Studios

Once a small agricultural village populated with gentleman farmers, Hollywood in the Cahuenga Valley, was a trolley ride from the city of Los Angeles.  When Cecil B. DeMille, Jessie Lasky, Griffith W. Griffith, and the Warner Brothers helped generate a building boom that made the area what it is today and "fired the shot heard round the world," the fantasy was created.  It became the center of the entertainment and broadcast industries and while much has changed, a legacy remains.

The Coming Of Wilcox

The history of Hollywood may have begun when, on February 1, 1887, Harvey Wilcox officially recorded the first real estate tract map, with the Los Angeles County recorder’s office. That tract map was named Hollywood. Wilcox and his wife, Daeida Wilcox, had moved to Southern California in 1883 from Topeka, Kansas, where Harvey had made his fortune in real estate. In 1886, they bought 120 acres of land in the Cahuenga Valley, located in the foothills to the west of the city of Los Angeles.
