Hollywood Airfield Photos

Hollywood Airfield Photos

It is rarely known by the general public, including Hollywood historians, that there was a couple of airfields just south of Hollywood. Located at the intersection of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue were two airfields. Cecil B DeMille was not only a wonderful film director, he was also an aviation pioneer. In late 1918, he formed the Mercury aviation company and established DeMille field #2, on the north side of Wilshire Boulevard and the west side of Crescent, now Fairfax Avenue.

Businessman Syd Chaplin came to Hollywood in 1919 to manage his brother, Charlie Chaplin. Being well-financed, he explored the struggling aeronautical industry and founded the chaplain aerodrome along with Emory Rogers. They established their aerodrome at the airfield across from the DeMille field #2. Syd Chaplin's involvement in the airfield lasted for only a few months, and was taken over by Emory Rogers, who named the airfield, Roger’s Field. When  Cecil B DeMille left Mercury aviation, the airfield was taken over by Rogers. These airfields lasted until early 1922 when they simply vanished.

The largest collection of Hollywood airfield photos is on the collection website.  There are more than 12,000 historical and vintage Hollywood photographs in the collection, and all are available for purchase.
