Hollywood Canteen Photographs

HOLLYWOOD CANTEEN PHOTOGRAPHS

HOLLYWOOD CANTEEN

In the 1940's, soldiers being sent off or just returning from service could enjoy a visit to the Hollywood Canteen, where they could hobnob with movie stars and Hollywood elite. The Hollywood Canteen was founded by John Garfield and Bette Davis. They offered free admission, free food, sodas and cigarettes to soldiers. What made the Hollywood Canteen so popular was the abundance of celebrities, from all facets of the entertainment industry, who volunteered their time to be with the servicemen.  There was an 'all you can eat' policy which was serve up by a host of stars wearing aprons.  It wasn't uncommon to see Bette Davis or Hedy Lamar serving coffee or sandwiches to the men in uniform. Dancing with the likes of Rita Hayworth, Marlene Dietrich, Bunny Waters, Fay McKenzie or Claire Trevor was the highlight of many soldiers who visited the Hollywood Canteen. The Hollywood Canteen may be closed but for anyone that loves vintage Hollywood, and particularly the Canteen, images and photographs of this famed nightspot can add a touch of personality and style to any room of your home. These images can also be a fun way to add that personality to your office or your business without overpowering the area with too many antiques and other such items.

Many who love vintage movies and the classics will immediately remember the Hollywood Canteen and recognize its image, and these photos can be a great conversation piece as well. Finding Hollywood Canteen photographs is very simple. Simply go on the internet and type in hollywoodphotographs.com.  There are hundreds of photographs  of everything that was offered at the Hollywood Canteen.  There are photographs of beautiful volunteers dancing with servicemen; photos of soldiers getting autographs from such stars a Spencer Tracy, Jane Powell, Joan Crawford, Joan Leslie, Faye Emerson, Jane Russell, Roddy McDowell and many more; and photographs of the industry's most talented celebrities entertaining the hundreds of servicemen who visited the Hollywood Canteen every night. On any night the soldiers might see Bill 'Bojangles' Robinson captivating the audience with his unequaled tap dancing, or Red Skelton doing his famous Guzzlers Gin skit, or Bing Crosby singing, or Dinah Shore belting out a great song or Bob Hope doing his standup comedy routines

In addition, there hundreds of Hollywood Canteen photographs of the Canteen's exterior, the grand opening ceremony, construction of the Canteen, Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations and of movie stars simply talking with the servicemen.

All of the photographs in the collection are available for purchase. Whether it's photographs of the Hollywood Canteen, photos of the hand and footprint ceremonies at the Chinese Theater, images of the famous Hollywood Bowl, or photos of the Hollywood Sign, hollywoodphotographs.com has it all.  With over 6000 photographs in the collection, you are bound to find what the right photo.
