Hollywood Sign Images for Purchase

Do you know why there are so many images of the Hollywood sign? Many people think that the sign exists as a symbol of the excess of the film making industry. Many feel that both Hollywood and Los Angeles are two of the most eccentric places in the world, and that the sign was erected as just another instance of this excess and extravagance. But in reality, the sign was erected to show off the upcoming development that was to be known as Hollywoodland.

In 1923, the developers of the Hollywoodland residential development, erected a sign on the side of the hills, just above the development  It read HOLLYWOODLAND. The letters were fifty feet high and thirty fee wide.  Made out of telephone poles, wood bracing and sheet metal the sigh was lighted by 4000 light bulbs.  By the late 1940s, the sign was in great disrepair.  The last four letters were removed and the letters that spelled Hollywood were refurbished.  By the mid-1970s, the Holluwood sign was in such disrepair that it needed to be torn down and a new one erected.  After months of fundraising events and large donations from several contributors ,including Alice Cooper and Hugh Hefner the new Hollywood Sign was built and unveiled in November, 1978.  For over sixty years, the Hollywood Sign has been recognized as Hollywood’s most popular icon.  Over the course of the past eighty five years, thousands of Hollywood Sign images have been taken.  The largest collection of Hollywood Sign images is hollywoodphotographs.com.  Looking these images will give the viewer a sense of the Hollywood sign’s rich history.  All of the Hollywood Sign Images on the hollywoodphotographs.com web site can be purchased for both commercial or personal use.
