Hollywood Walk of Fame Concept

The man credited with the idea for conceiving the idea of a Hollywood Walk of Fame, was E. M. Stuart, who served in 1953 as the volunteer president of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. In that year, according to a Chamber press release he proposed the Walk as a means to 'maintain the glory of a community whose name means glamour and excitement in the four corners of the world.' He appointed a committee to begin fleshing out the idea and the architectural firm of Periera and Luckman was employed to develop some specific proposals. Where the original idea came from is not certain; however, the ceiling of the dining room of the historic Hollywood Hotel once had stars painted on the ceiling with the names of celebrities and that may have been a precursor of the idea to place stars in the sidewalks.

First Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony

Joanne Woodward was the first celebrity to pose with a Walk of Fame star. She was one of eight celebrities to be selected to have their names placed in the new Walk of Fame. After the Walk of Fame concept had been adopted in the mid-1950s, construction of the twelve story First Federal Savings of Hollywood building, on the NW corner of Hollywood Blvd. & Highland Ave., was begun. By early 1958, the exterior of the building was nearly completed and it was time to install the sidewalk, next to the building, on Hollywood Blvd. and Highland Ave. It was decided to implement the the Walk of Fame concept and install a terrazzo sidewalk, rather than cement. In mid-1958, a construction/installation ceremony was held in front of the new First Federal building. Those in attendance were Charles E. Toberman, Harry Sugarman, Earle Baker, Otto K. Olesen, actor Marvin Miller, actor Preston Foster and actress Doroty Malone.

Since Joanne Woodward's Hollywood Walk of Fame star was dedicated, there have been over 2500 celebrities honored. Thousands upon thousands of photos have been taken of the celebrities having their stars unveiled in the terrazzo sidewalk.  Beginning in the early 1970s, Bruce Torrence has been collecting historic photographs of Hollywood.
