Some of the finest Hollywood theater photos are on the hollywoodphotographs.com web site. There are more than two hundred images of these fine Theaters. Palace theaters are those type of movie theaters that were very large and extremely ornate.  The first movie theaters were simply storefronts where chairs were placed in front of a table and projector and the image projected onto a white sheet. As movie began to become popular, more elaborate facilities were constructed.  By 1915, movie theaters were very much like they are today, where the projector was enclosed in a small room behind the audience’s seats. The first theater in Hollywood was the Iris Theater, on Hollywood Boulevard. This was followed by the Hollywood Theater, which was built in 1915.

As time went on and as movies were in great demand, larger theaters were built. By the mid-1920s, large and very ornate theaters were beginning to be constructed. ...

One of the worlds most unique shopping centers, the Crossroads of the World, was opened on October 29, 1936 and was built in the shape of a cruise ship with a revolving globe on a spire. When the Crossroads of the World had its grand opening, many of Hollywood's celebrities attended the event including, Cesar Romero, Boris Karloff, Marjorie Gage, Emily Lane, and a galaxy of business and civic leaders. With more than 8,000 historic photos of Hollywood, hollywoodphotographs.com is the largest and most complete collection of historic Hollywood photos in the world. The website has more than 90 subject categories from which to choose.

The collection was founded by Bruce Torrence in 1970 and, today, it is one of the most popular photograph websites on the internet.  Some of the interesting subject categories include, Hollywood Aerials, Cahuenga Pass, Gilmore Field, Hollywood Blvd., Theaters, and Schwab’s Pharmacy.

Schwab’s Pharmacy Opens

The largest collection of vintage Schwab’s Pharmacy photos is on the hollywoodphotographs.com website. Schwab's Pharmacy opened at 8024 Sunset Boulevard in 1932, and was run by brothers Bernard, Leon, Jack and Martin Schwab. They had purchased a failing drugstore and decided to capitalize on the local business from nearby studios, like Republic, RKO, and Columbia. The first Schwab's was located downtown on 6th. It was a typical drugstore of its time--goods and sundries available for purchase, prescriptions filled, and a soda fountain with counter service--only it happened to be in the heart of Hollywood.
