Paul DeLongpre was born in Lyon, France in 1855. reared and educated in Paris and at the age of twelve, began painting flowers on fans.  In 1874, he married Miss Josephine Estivenard.  In 1896. he staged a watercolor flower painting exhibition in New York.  Three years later, he came to Los Angeles with his wife and three children, Alice, Blanche and Pauline.  He was an habitué of the bicycle and in his wanderings for flowers, often visited the Cahuenga Valley (later known as Hollywood(, where he met the Blondeau family. While exhibiting some of his paintings, he met Mrs. Wilcox Beveridge to whom she expressed an interest in building a home and studio in the Cahuenga Valley.  In 1901, he purchased three sixty-five foot  lots, facing east on Cahuenga Ave., north of the corner lot on Prospect Ave. (now Hollywood Blvd.) from Mrs. Beveridge.  In 1902, he purchased the corner lot for $3,000, in lieu of which Mrs. Beveridge accepted three paintings.

For almost ten years, DeLongpre's home played host to many parties and community functions. His home and studio was the first tourist attraction in Hollywood, a popular attraction on the “Balloon  Route Excursion” which was a street car route from Los Angeles to Hollywood, to the Soildiers’ home in Sawtelle, to Santa Monica and back to Los Angeles.  Scores of people would disembark the streetcar and tour DeLongpre’s studio and beautiful gardens. It was in his gardens that he painted his many floral masterpieces

After DeLongpre’s death in 1911, his wife and children returned to France.
