Vintage Cocoanut Grove Photos

The Cocoanut Grove was located in the Ambassador Hotel on Wilshire Blvd.  Opened in 1921, the hotel was one of the most impressive buildings in Los Angeles.  The Cocoanut Grove was, without question, the most elegant, beautiful and popular nightclubs in Los Angeles, during the 1920s and 1930s. Celebrities from all facets of the entertainment world went to the Cocoanut Grove to dance and dine.  Also, many from Hollywood’s high society were also guest of the popular nightclub.

Ambassador Hotel and its night club and how popular it was during the 1930's and 1940's. It's a good thing that there are still some Coconut Grove photos left for us to see how glorious it was then. The hotel actually opened on January 1, 1921 and its previous location was at the center of Los Angeles' mid-Wilshire District. Pasadena architect Myron Hunt that designed it and was considered to be one of the most famous hotels during its time. Since the year the Ambassador Hotel and its night club started, it has hosted a lot of gatherings, fashion shows, events and the biggest names in the world of entertainment and was even frequented by most Hollywood personalities and luminaries in the world.

Some of the celebrities that were captured in the Cocoanut Grove pictures having a great time were Bette Davis, Sonia Henje, Jean Harlow and William Powell.

The Cocoanut Grove nightclub hosted the biggest names in entertainment, such as Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Bing Crosby, Lisa Minnelli, Martin and Lewis, The Supremes, Mervin Griffin, Dorothy Dandridge, Evelyn Knight, Perry Como, and Richard Pryor.

On June 5, 1968, and following a short victory speech in the Embassy Room ballroom of the Ambassador Hotel, the winner of the California Democratic presidential primary election, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, was shot along with five other people. The hotel closed its doors in 2005 and became part of Los Angeles’ history.
