Crossroads Of The World

Crossroads of the World has been called America's first outdoor shopping mall. Located on Sunset Boulevard and Las Palmas in Hollywood the mall features a central building designed to resemble an ocean liner surrounded by a small village of cottage-style bungalows. It was designed by Robert V. Derrahh and built in 1936 for owner Ella Crawford. The exclusion of automobiles and the numerous fine old trees, lent the old world atmosphere in contrast to the busy streets of Hollywood. One side of the complex were buildings of Italian and French architecture, and on the other, Spanish and Mexican. In the center was a marine-modern structure surmounted by a sixty foot tower on which a world, eight feet in diameter, revolves. Further up the comples were buildings of Moorish and Turkish design while the entrance from Las Palmas Avenue was a narrow crooked street reminiscent of old Cape Cod. Once a busy shopping center, the Crossroads now hosts private offices, primarily for the entertainment industry. It has been used for location shooting in many films, including L.A. Confidential and The Adventures of Ford Fairlane, in TV shows including Dragnet and Remington Steele, and in commercials by McDonald's, Ford and Mattel. In the 1960s, the Crossroads buildings housed many tenants involved in the Song poem music industry scam business. Liberace's brother, George, was one such entrepreneur with an office at the Crossroads. Jimmy Webb noted songwriter, was known to sleep on the floor of his office when he was broke and homeless. In the late-1960s, one of the offices was occupied by a porn magazine that tried out young hopefuls by photographing them in the nude. It was here that an unknown John C. Holmes went one day and showcased his unusually large "endowment", leading to the start of his notorious career in adult films. Today, Crossroads is the creative home of a variety of music publishers and producers, television and film script writers, film and recording companies, novelists, costume designers, publicists and casting agencies. The complex has been lovingly restored to its former 1936 glory. In 1974, the Cross Roads of the World was declared a Historic-Cultural Monument of the City of Los Angeles. On this site are scores of historic Crossroads of the World photos, Crossroads of the World images and Crossroads of the World pictures.
