Situated across the street from the famed Garden of Allah Hotel, the store was renamed Schwab's Pharmacy. Soon after the store opened, in 1932, Hollywood's famous began coming down from the hills to pick up sundries, gather to meet friends, or just relax over a soda or cup of coffee. Schwab's Pharmacy became known for the stars...

In 1924, the retail merchant’s bureau, a division of the Chamber of Commerce, instituted a campaign for increasing the Christmas business for the merchants on Hollywood Boulevard. Street decorations, consisting of imitation fireplace chimneys, were placed on prominent corners. This decoration was varied and bunting and overhead Christmas lights hung over the street. Thus, the name Santa Claus Lane was formally adopted. For years...

Hollywood Police Department

Hollywood Police Department

Shortly after Hollywood was incorporated as a city of the sixth class, Daeida Wilcox Beverage donated a lot on Cahuenga Avenue, just south of Prospect Avenue, for use as the City Hall and Police Department. A small, two room wood-frame bungalow was erected, which house the police department, city engineer, and city clerk. Photos of the Hollywood Police Department and the city hall are on the website.

The police force, which consisted of two officers, originally made their calls on horseback, but as time wore on, they raced to the scene on bicycles.

The Farmers Market Photos

The Farmers Market is one of Hollywood’s most popular and famous tourist attractions.  Many vintage Farmers Market photos can be seen on the website.

In the 1880s, Arthur Fremont Gilmore purchased a large tract of land in the Los Angeles area on which he ran a successful dairy farm.

Gilmore Oil

In 1903, while drilling for water, Arthur Fremont Gilmore struck oil. At that time, Gilmore was in the dairy business, having acquired his 256 acre farm in the 1980s. One rich well after another was brought in on the old farm, changing it into an oilfield studded with oil derrick's and processing plants. In addition, a shack town arose to supply the needs of the workers....
